As Milt Friedman pointed out over 40 years ago, Politicians are as most people motivated by self-interest. They'd love to help you, but honestly, they need to tend to their "needs" first. That means getting reelected which isn't cheap.
There are lots of ways they can garner funds and influence to stay in business. Sadly most of them don't benefit you. Is this a conspiracy? No, just people acting normally.
