Fewer than a third of UN member states have ever had a woman leader

Only 59 of the 193 UN member states have ever had a woman as the head of government, including 13 countries that are currently led by women. In nine of the countries currently led by women, the head of government is the first woman to hold the job. Three countries have seen their first-ever woman leader take office in the past year: Peru, Italy and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
