Is NY the nation's "rudest" city?

Apparently, while the Midwest leads the nation's friendliest cities, Chicago isn't on the list...because of the systemic racism, I guess?

The rudest city in the US might not be where you think it is: survey

When it comes to impolite places in the US, the Panhandle is like a giant middle finger.

The Big Apple has a reputation for rudeness, but is it really the most impolite city in the US? Not according to a recent survey, which found that Miami, Florida takes the cake when it comes to having a discourteous populace.

The study, conducted by language learning platform Preply, found that the Magic City was “the rudest in 2024,” with locals ranking their fellow residents a whopping 9.88 out of ten on the impudence scale.

This was based on a variety of factors, including lack of awareness in public, noisiness in shared places, and rudeness to service staff, per the survey.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania came in 2nd in the rudeness rankings. Nearly a quarter of Americans have considered relocating due to the ill-mannered antics of their fellow residents.

Coming in second and third were Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9.12) and Tampa, Florida (8.88) — the latter of which was named the rudest city by Preply in 2022.

“If you’re in Miami, FL, Philadelphia, PA, or Tampa, FL, don’t be surprised if you come across the rudest people you’ve ever met,” Preply wrote.

To deduce the most ill-mannered metropolises, the site polled residents about “social behaviors they noticed in their city” and then calculated a rudeness score on a scale from one to ten.

Rounding out the top five on this Mount Rushmore of rudeness were Louisville, Kentucky (8.72) and Oakland, California (8.67) respectively.

In fact, many cities seem to be getting more insolent with Louisville, KY, Charlotte, NC, and Austin, TX, all placing at least five spots higher in the rude rankings than they did in 2022.

Overall, the most commonly-observed rude behaviors were a lack of care for others, noisiness in public, and a lack of self-awareness. Meanwhile, the older an American is, the more likely they are to view transplants as ruder than long-time residents, per the study.

olitics played a factor as well. A staggering 1 in 2 Americans think residents of their city have become more rude ahead of the upcoming election.

To make matters worse, nearly a quarter of Americans have considered relocating due to the ill-mannered antics of their fellow residents.

Fortunately, there are plenty of polite cities to counterbalance the rudeness.

The least rude city was Omaha, Nebraska with an average ranking of 6.24 on the rudeness scale.

This was followed by Minneapolis, Minnesota with 6.35 (it seems that “Minnesota nice” is a real thing) and San Diego, California with 6.68.

Surprising to some, New York City didn’t even place in the top 10 rudest US cities.

Midwestern cities dominated the least rude list.

Just like with their impolite counterparts, many of these polite cities got increasingly more so from two years back.

“Looking back at 2022, cities like San Diego, CA, ranked significantly kinder, moving down 15 spots on the rudest cities list,” Preply wrote. “The top cities that improved most on rudeness by moving down on the list the most spots were Washington D.C., Detroit, MI, San Jose, CA, and Milwaukee, WI.”

They added, “This shows that it’s possible for the general norm in a city to frequently change, resulting in a more positive experience for those who reside in or visit it.”
