Border Wall Decision Widely Approved by Voters

Last week’s decision by President Joe Biden’s administration to permit construction to begin again on a border wall in Texas has met with overwhelming voter approval.


The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 73% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of the decision to allow more border wall construction, including 48% who Strongly Approve. Only 22% disapprove, including 10% who Strongly Disapprove. (To see survey question wording, click here.)


The administration announced last week that because of “an acute and immediate need” for a border wall it was waiving more than a dozen federal environmental laws that halted construction. The decision is approved by 86% of Republicans, 62% of Democrats and 74% of voters unaffiliated with either major party.


Former President Donald Trump said the decision proved he was right about the need for a border wall. Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters agree that the Biden administration’s decision proves Trump was right, including 43% who Strongly Agree. Thirty-five percent (35%) disagree, including 25% who Strongly Disagree.


The survey of 1,009 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on October 5 and 8-9, 2023 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.


Eighty percent (80%) of voters believe the issue of immigration will be important in the 2024 presidential election, including 52% who think it will be Very Important. Just 16% say immigration won’t be an important issue in the election.


Fewer Democrats (39%) than Republicans (67%) or unaffiliated voters (53%) think immigration will be a Very Important issue in next year’s election.


Republicans (69%) are more likely than Democrats (20%) or unaffiliated voters to Strongly Agree that the Biden administration’s decision to allow border wall construction proves Trump was right about the need for a border wall.


Men (54%) are more likely than women voters (43%) to Strongly Approve of the decision to allow more border wall construction.


Seventy-two percent (72%) of whites, 71% of black voters and 79% of other minorities at least somewhat approve of the Biden administration’s decision to allow more border wall construction. Black voters are less likely to Strongly Agree that the decision proves Trump was right.


Voters 65 and older are most likely to Strongly Approve of the Biden administration’s border wall decision, and are also most likely to think the immigration issue will be Very Important in the 2024 election.


Breaking down the electorate by income categories, voters earning between $30,000 and $50,000 a year are most likely to Strongly Agree that the Biden administration’s decision proves Trump was right about the need for a border wall.


Among voters who Strongly Approve of the Biden administration’s decision to allow more border wall construction, 82% say the decision proves Trump was right.


The decision to go ahead with border wall construction is most pleasing to voters who generally oppose Biden. Among those who Strongly Disapprove of Biden’s job performance as president, 83% Strongly Approve of the border wall decision. By contrast, among voters who Strongly Approve of Biden’s performance, only 25% Strongly Approve of the decision to allow more border wall construction.


A week after the House of Representatives voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, voters are divided over whether that was a smart move.


An overwhelming majority of voters believe it’s important to teach traditional values, but less than a third think America’s public schools are doing a good job at it.
