Shortly after the end of WWII, approximately 3.5 million Jews remained in Europe (out of the 9.5 million alive in 1933). Were these refugees welcomed at home or the United States? Generally not. The formation of Israel in 1948 was heavily supported by Truman and was an attempt to place the “chosen people” somewhere “else”.
Of course, that somewhere wasn’t exactly perfect. Even the most naïve of historical scholars could have easily predicted that the Tribe would face continual issues with their neighbors and a certain level of terrorist fallout in perpetuity. That reality continues today and for the foreseeable future.
In current times, Iran has suckered Bibi’s government into a three-front war by promoting a small-scale terrorist invasion in Oct of 2023. By small scale, I mean it pales compared to the wider conflict unleashed by design. The war benefits Iran by isolating Israel from allying with its Sunni Arab neighbors against the Shiite state.
Whatever your ethical view on the matter is, one thing is perfectly clear, while Israel has the right and obligation to retaliate against its enemies (Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis & ultimately their leader Iran), its misguided military tactics in Gaza have led to 2 million innocents seeing their lives (& communities destroyed). That latter misstep has done little to eradicate Hamas (by the IDF’s own admission) but it has caused Israel’s government to be considered a pariah by a growing share of the civilized world. Global anti-Semitism has always existed, but it’s now growing exponentially.
Israel’s failed military policy in Gaza has ironically made the country less secure. This is in contrast to their forays against Hezbollah, Houthis and Iran which arguably may produce some tangible results. Whatever the outcome, Israel will continue to suffer terrorist attacks for decades to come. That’s the price of living in hostile territory.
PS. Teddy Roosevelt famously said, “walk softly and carry a big stick”. In contrast Biden blathers endlessly about protecting innocent civilians while arming Israel to the teeth. Teddy would have refused to allow Bibi to receive and use American weaponry against its strategic interests.
Kamala won’t do much better, nor will Donald (albeit the Iranians probably think he’s nuts and capable of anything. That worked for Reagan with the Rooskies).
