Today's story in Axios:
Crime drop weakens Trump's argument
Crime in Chicago continues to decline, strengthening local leaders' narrative that President Trump is politically targeting the city with the federalization of the National Guard.
Why it matters: Declining crime could have an impact on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on whether the National Guard can be deployed in Chicago. The court has yet to issue a ruling.
The latest: October statistics show the city's crime rates declining across the board, which reflects the low numbers nationally.
By the numbers: Chicago led the nation with a 22.1% drop in overall violent crime during the first nine months of 2025, according to an Axios review of crime data.
This year, there have been 359 homicides through October, which is down from 497 last year during the same time.
This is all true, however, Chicago back in the 1990s had a homicide rate similar to LA and NYC. Those cities were able to lower their crime rates substantially, some of which happened due to an aging population which commits less crime. Chicago is in no position to take a victory lap. The Axios news story is pretty misleading.
Honestly, this is one reason I put out my stupid tabloid. Much of what you read in the media is pretty divorced from reality. Better you digest my crap.
BTW: You may have noticed that Chicago homicides go through the roof starting in 2015. Who was Mayor from 2011 to 2019, Rahm Emanuel. His a smart guy, a centrist, probably going to run for President. Not great on public safety?
One more thing. Starting in 2016 you see Chicago elect a new States Attorney. Kim Foxx. Did her new approach to prosecuting crime have any impact?
