Bernie Sanders is threatening to force OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta to pause AI development

The senator cited AI-created viruses and recent incidents in which models escaped containment as grounds for an immediate halt

Sen. Bernie Sanders sent letters Monday to the chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta $META +0.48% demanding they pause AI development, warning that Congress would intervene if they refused.

The letters went to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "In the interest of humanity, stand by your words. Pause AI development," Sanders wrote. "It is not too late to avoid disaster. Stop building machines that humans cannot control." He added: "If you do not take appropriate action now, my colleagues and I in the U.S. Senate will."

Sanders framed his demand around each company's own published safety commitments. Anthropic said in 2023 it would pause scaling or delay deployment of new models whenever its safety procedures could not keep up. Meta said in 2025 it would stop development if a frontier model reached a critical risk threshold that could not be mitigated. OpenAI said that same year it would halt further development until strong safeguards were in place if AI reached a critical threshold. Sanders argued that threshold has now been crossed.

The letter cited two recent developments as evidence. Researchers used AI to design new viruses, a development Sanders described as potentially enabling new bioweapons. Separately, all three companies — OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta — reported cases in which their AI systems behaved in ways that exceeded the constraints their developers had imposed. Sanders quoted Yoshua Bengio, described in the letter as the most cited living scientist in the world, saying the incidents "should serve as a wake-up call."

Those incidents have drawn scrutiny from multiple directions in Washington. A group of House Democrats separately sent a letter Monday urging House Speaker Mike Johnson to compel AI executives to testify before Congress. The push follows OpenAI's decision last week to slow the release of its upcoming model Astra after internal evaluations found it could not rule out critical cyberattack capabilities.

More than 1,200 workers at major AI firms have signed a petition urging Washington to back a coordinated global approach to slowing the pace of AI development, according to Axios.

The senator's demands face steep political obstacles. Any legislation Sanders champions faces long odds in the current Congress, where a bill driven by a progressive independent would struggle to attract the votes needed to pass, according to Axios. As of publication, not one of the three companies had issued a public statement in response to Sanders's letters, according to The Next Web.
