Saw this map and said to myself..."WTF"? Hold on there partner. In most of these case you need the consent of their parents. So don't forget to bring flowers.
I also thought it might be of interest to check out the age someone can be prosecuted for statutory rape.

Roughly the shape of it, but the framing on the red "0" states is misleading. Some real patterns it gets right:

Where the map is misleading: the "0 — possibly common law minimum of 12 for girls and 14 for boys" label for states like CA, NM, OK, and MS. That "12/14" figure is an old English common-law age that isn't the actual operative rule in these states — it's a myth that circulates in these viral infographics, not something codified in current statute. The accurate description is: these states have no explicit numeric floor and instead require a judge's approval for underage marriage, which is a very different (and much more restrictive in practice) thing than "any 12-year-old can marry." I'd treat the specific state colors with some caution too — sourcing on this varies by month as states pass new laws (e.g., New Hampshire recently became the 13th state to require 18 with no exceptions), so a few individual states may be out of date depending on when this graphic was made. This is a different, more standardized legal concept — worth noting it's not the same axis as marriage age (a state can have a lower marriage-with-consent age than its age of consent, and vice versa).
A few notes on this map, sourced from state statutes via Guttmacher/RAINN:
16 is the most common threshold (32 states) — the light blue.
17: Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, and Texas.
18: Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin.
Two caveats worth keeping in mind, since this topic gets oversimplified a lot: many states have "Romeo and Juliet" close-in-age exemptions that reduce or eliminate liability when both partners are teenagers close in age (38 states have some form of this), and a handful — California, Arizona, Hawaii, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New York, Ohio, and Virginia — have no such exemption, meaning the flat age applies regardless of how close in age the two people are.
