The Word in Maps
At first glance, Canada looks vast and evenly spread but when you divide the country by population, the picture changes dramatically.
Each colored area on this map represents roughly 8.6 million people. The result? Enormous northern and western regions balance out the dense population corridors of southern Ontario and Quebec.
Despite being the second-largest country in the world, most Canadians live within 200 km of the U.S. border, leaving vast stretches of the north almost empty.
