The Thunderdome Debate
By John Kass
Sunday September 8, 2024
Most Americans can vaguely remember the post apocalyptic 1985 Mad Max movie “Beyond Thunderdome,” where disputes were settled savagely with fights to the death before an audience of screaming illiterates in the Wasteland.
And as the presidential debate on Tuesday approaches between Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump, most pundits agree that this could very well be a make-or-break event.
If one candidate falters and bites the dust, there won’t be time enough for their brain trusts and spinners to resurrect their candidacies. As the toothless denizens of Bartertown might say in their Australian accents, in Thunderdome “Two men enter, one man leaves.”
But they were talking about just two individuals locked in mortal combat over pig methane and gas and drinkable water. One wins and walks away. The other bites the dust and waits for the flies.
In all that, there was never a belief that the combined newsrooms of the Associated Press, the New York Times, Washington Post, the dying Chicago Tribune and the rest of the corrupt legacy media would join in–including CNN, NPR, NBC, ABC, CBS and MSNBC and others–and grab rusty chainsaws and begin thrusting and carving and lopping arms and head and legs.
But that’s where we are.
You have common sense. Your own experience should tell you what “the media” thinks of you. If you can’t understand that there really is no helping you.
Because after all the gushing and joyful news coverage that Kamala Harris has received–as she’s hidden herself and her flip-flopping on policies from the American people with the assistance and encouragement of the corrupt legacy media–there is one thing that Republicans should keep in mind before Tuesday’s debate.
She’ll go for the face and for the throat. The media will support and shield her. If she survives, yet makes a fool of herself with her trademark word salads and mentally wanders all over the place as she did in her disastrous CNN interview, the media I mentioned will proclaim her the winner. They’ll cheer her name and recast her as Obama 2.0. We’ll be washed with Democrat feelings. We’ll be required to “feel the joy.”
That’s where America is now, as we stand on the precipice and contemplate the cultural suicide that the west has been flirting with for years.
For example, a study by the conservative Media Research Center found that starting July 21, news coverage of Kamala Harris was 84 percent positive. Coverage of Donald Trump was 89 percent negative. And even through all that, she’s avoided media coverage though she’s been given oodles of pro-Kamala news stories–the presidential campaign is just about even. So her media friends will double down. That’s exactly what they’ve been doing since old Joe Biden was pushed out the Obama led coup.
And just the other day, as that Georgia 14-year-old allegedly shot and killed classmates and teachers, the media rushed in to put their feet on the scales. The Associated Press went out of its way to mislead the public by using a select snippet of a quote by Trump’s vice presidential nominee, conservative Ohio Sen. J.D. Vancde.
“If these psychos are going to go after our kids we’ve got to be prepared for it,” Vance said. “We don’t have to like the reality that we live in, but it is the reality we live in. We’ve got to deal with it. I don’t like that this is a fact of life,” Vance said. “But if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children they’re not able.”
That’s not how the Associated Press characterized Vance’s remarks. AP used only a bit of Vance’s quote to distort what he said:
“JD Vance says school shootings are a ‘fact of life,’ calls for better security,” the AP’s original post on X said.
But that’s not what Vance said. He didn’t just shrug off the tragedy and murder in Georgia. That was what the AP wanted him to say. It was a lie. The AP printed the lie.
That AP post was later deleted and replaced with an updated caption.
Yet the damage had been done. The AP slithered away. News organizations among AP clients including the never-Trumpers in the Chicago Tribune seized upon the earlier, incorrect AP configuration of Vance’s comments. And that’s all the Democrats needed. Leftist media sites like Axios (which means ‘worthy’ in Greek) just loves the fact that they help her avoid interviews and public scrutiny.
Mark Hemingway, writing in The Federalist said, “the lengths to which they are going to ensure she doesn’t have to answer questions are officially comical — see her recent bizarre boarding of a plane where she had her headphones plugged into her phone, while still holding her phone up to her ear. Either she really wanted to send a strong visual signal that she was on the phone and therefore unable to take questions or she’s an idiot who doesn’t know how phones work. Come to think of it, these explanations are not mutually exclusive.”
Harris and the perpetual weirdo lying braggart she has chosen for her running mate have been applauded by this same leftist corporate media for their craftiness.
But most Americans see this for what it is: simply cowardice. By agreeing with silence, the American people also applaud the ending of democracy and their republic.
And now where are we, with the Trump Harris debate scheduled for Tuesday night?
Media is constantly taking sides and promoting the leftist agenda. Even the robots in our homes have picked up on it. Debate analysis will focus dangerously on showbiz, not policy.
Corporate media blatantly taking sides is a partisan issue. But I think it’s also a class issue. When I started my career more than 40 years ago, we considered ourselves to be reporters. We considered ourselves like tradesmen. We built stories the way carpenters, bricklayers, electricians and plumbers would build a house. But I had gone into the business after journalists were consumed through the Watergate scandal with their self-importance. Journalism declined and became so prissy and self-important that we stopped writing for the American people. It all fell apart after the BLM riots. Journos became consumed with leading the leftist insurrection. Americans stopped paying attention to journalism. It was over.
It went woke. Then it went broke.

Lukas has written for many thoughtful journals, including my favorite, The Federalist, which is edited by Mollie Hemingway. Most recently in The Federalist was her brilliant essay about the media hiding the Democrat nominee:
Kamala Harris’ Campaign is Making Women Look Incompetent
“I think about some of the leading women on the left Lukas said. “Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, these women. They were able to do interviews, they spoke for themselves. I didn’t agree with them most of the time, but they were representing themselves, representing their beliefs and seemed very capable. And I think it just is such a contrast right now, watching Kamala Harris. It’s a depressing idea. After long last, if we’re going to have a female president, it’s going to be somebody who seems so terrified and so controlled, so much like a puppet to somebody else.”
But that’s who she is. She repeats what she’s been told to say. Harris says nothing, refuses to sit for serious interviews because she doesn’t have serious policies, and American Democrat feminists simply bob their heads in eager agreement and feel the unspecified joy.
Yet no matter what she says in the Thunderdome, she will be pronounced victorious by the people who hold the megaphones and write the blatantly biased news stories, like AP and the rest.
But there are a few men who are impervious to the leftist American media’s charms.
China’s Xi Jinping is impervious. As is Russia’s Vladimir Putin. And Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Ruler of Iran.
They don’t care about spin. They don’t care what leftist journalists say.
But they do feel true joy, when thinking about Kamala Harris getting closer to the White House. They look to the future, to a President Harris who has not done the required reading, and homework. They thrill to the vibes of an America that is not serious about its own survival, unburdened by what has been.
They laugh at us.
