I have every confidence James will screw it up.

BTW, whatever the criminality (or not) of it, the idea of 7 Ivy League dudes taking turns on an inebriated coed is disgraceful bordering on barbaric. I'm sure their parents while lawyering up are proud of their entitled progeny.

This is the typo of pond scum that's gained admittance to our finest universities? Perhaps a good additional step would be to can the admissions staff at these institutions and find some more enlightened folks who could find some kids with a better moral compass...I suppose that's too much to ask?

Letitia James and the Cornell 7

Hochul’s special prosecutor, the New York Attorney General, seems to have prejudged the case.

What is New York Gov. Kathy Hochul thinking? Her decision to appoint state Attorney General Letitia James as the special prosecutor in the case of seven Cornell male students alleged to have known of or engaged in the rape of a female undergraduate couldn’t be a worse decision for the cause of transparent justice.

As Justin Dillon writes nearby, Ms. James appears to have prejudged the evidence before she has seen it. “What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable,” Ms. James wrote on Facebook before she was appointed by Ms. Hochul. “To her, and to all survivors: you’re not alone. We stand with you.”

That should be disqualifying on its face. A prosecutor is supposed to examine the evidence and make a judgment about whether a jury would find the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Ms. Hochul says she lost confidence in the local district attorney who declined to bring charges, but how can the public have confidence that Ms. James isn’t prejudiced against the male students?

The ugly facts of the Cornell 7 case are in dispute, and we don’t profess to know who is right. The students clearly engaged in awful behavior, and Cornell has punished them after its investigation. But the issue for a prosecutor is whether this rises to the level of a criminal offense.

In choosing Ms. James, a progressive who has abused her power for political purposes in the past, the Governor looks to be bending to the social-media mob that wants the students charged. The victim, the Cornell 7 and the cause of justice deserve better.
