Should you hold your farts in?

I've been telling people this for decades, but no one listens. I finally consulting several AI Models (Gemini Ai below) and received consistently astute medical advice.

The short answer is: No, it is generally better to let it out.

While holding in gas isn't usually life-threatening, it can cause significant physical discomfort and, in some cases, lead to a rather awkward biological workaround.

What Happens When You Hold It In?

When you tighten your sphincter muscles to prevent gas from escaping, the pressure begins to build up in your digestive system. Here is what typically follows:

Abdominal Pain: The trapped gas can cause bloating, physical distension of the gut, and sharp cramps.

Heartburn and Indigestion: Increased abdominal pressure can sometimes push against the stomach, potentially worsening acid reflux.

Reabsorption into the Bloodstream: This is the most surprising part. If gas can’t escape through the anus, some of it can be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall into your bloodstream. From there, it travels to your lungs and is eventually exhaled through your breath.

Are There Long-Term Risks?

In extreme cases, chronic "holding it" can lead to a condition called diverticulitis. This occurs when small pouches (diverticula) develop in the wall of the colon due to high pressure. If these pouches become inflamed or infected, it can lead to serious complications.

The Verdict

From a medical perspective, passing gas is a normal and necessary sign that your digestive system is working correctly. Most people pass gas between 10 and 20 times a day.

If you are in a social situation where you can't let it go, the best move is to find a restroom or step outside as soon as possible to relieve the pressure.
