The real average penis size, according to 33 studies — both length and girth

Men are known to stretch the truth about what’s in their trousers.

One study found that the average Joe exaggerates the length of his manhood by around 20% — with one particularly big-talking fellow claiming he was packing a peter 50 times larger than an average elephant’s.

But that begs the question: Just how long is the average dong?

Medical reviews have found that the average flaccid member clocks in around 3.63 inches long and 3.58 inches in girth when measured by a medical professional.

When fully erect, the average willy grows to approximately 5.45 inches in length and 4.69 inches in girth.

If those numbers are smaller than you expected, you’re certainly not alone.

“In therapy, we frequently see that men believe the true ‘average’ is much larger, often around 6½ to 7 inches,” Vanessa Cushing, a certified sex and couples therapist, told The Post.

“Men often overestimate or exaggerate because our culture closely links penis size to masculinity, worth and the ability to give pleasure,” she said.

The disconnect, Cushing explained, often stems from the cultural messages and unrealistic expectations we absorb about how sex and bodies are supposed to look.

“When the main sources of education [are] mainstream pornography, locker-room bragging or pop culture, men are comparing themselves to extreme outliers,” she said.

“This creates a widespread sense of inadequacy, often leading to performance anxiety or penile dysmorphic disorder, where men believe their entirely normal bodies are flawed.”

Anxiety around penis size is linked to higher rates of erectile dysfunction and lower intercourse satisfaction.

In the US, around 26.4% of guys are dissatisfied with the size of their johnson, according to a 2019 survey of 4,109 men.

Men are going to extreme lengths to make their penises bigger with ‘SWAG’ procedure

The sentiment appears to be worldwide, with a 2015 survey of 15,521 men around the globe finding that just 55% were happy with their downstairs dimensions.

But the consequences can go beyond bruised egos.

Men with penile dysmorphic disorder or small penis anxiety have been shown to experience higher rates of erectile dysfunction, as well as lower intercourse satisfaction, than men who aren’t preoccupied with their package.

And while popular culture often associates a larger member with virility, power, masculinity and status, research suggests women generally place far less importance on their partner’s measurements than men might think.

In studies, around 85% of women reported being satisfied with their partner’s penis size, while 45% of men admitted they’d prefer to have a little more below the belt.

If you’re feeling shortchanged, Cushing said there are a few suggestions she often makes to patients.

First: Focus on anatomy over depth.

“The majority of sensitive nerve endings in the vagina (including the internal clitoral network) are located within the first 2 to 3 inches,” she said. “Real pleasure is built on arousal, communication and emotional presence, not length.”

Next up: Audit your media diet.

“Take a conscious step back from media that triggers body shame,” Cushing advised. “Realizing that adult entertainment casts performers specifically for extreme traits can help reset realistic expectations.”

And finally: Shift from performance to connection.

“Practice focusing on overall sensory touch rather than treating intimacy like a physical test to pass,” she urged.
