Tehran demonstrates broad reach of ballistic missiles with attempt on the U.S.-U.K. Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean.
President Trump threatened to “hit and obliterate” Iran’s power plants if the country doesn’t end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in the next 48 hours. Iran’s blockade of the critical oil conduit has driven oil prices above $100 a barrel and allowed the regime to inflict economic pain despite a punishing air campaign by American and Israeli militaries.
In Israel, Iranian missile strikes injured dozens and damaged buildings on Saturday after Israeli air defenses failed to intercept at least two missiles. One of the strikes targeted the town of Dimona, roughly 10 miles from Israel’s main nuclear facility in the Negev Desert.
The strikes came after Iran carried out one of its farthest missile launches on record, targeting Diego Garcia, a joint U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean.
Here’s what else to know:
Iran’s use of intermediate-range ballistic missiles demonstrated its arsenal can now reach Europe.
Iran said its Natanz nuclear facility was attacked for the second time in the current war.
Australia and the U.A.E. became the latest countries to back a joint statement now signed by 22 nations signaling their readiness to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pentagon is sending three warships and thousands of additional Marines to the Middle East, in the second deployment of Marines to the region in the past week.
