I know this will seem odd, but our nation needs more people studying gender differences, diversity and mindfulness.


China is missing the boat by generating armies of engineers and removing barriers for businesses to innovate. Sure they'll run the world, most in Gen Z & Millennials will work for a Chinese conglomerate but...we'll be more psychologically "centered". That is until we realize our economy is getting squeezed like Germany is experiencing now.


Never mind. Forgot that.

Greetings, technically-minded reader of where tomorrow's engineers come from!


Every country wants more scientists, engineers, and programmers — but "producing STEM talent" turns out to mean something different depending on whether you're counting raw headcount, share of the graduating class, or growth rate.


Each measure crowns a genuinely different set of winners.


So who's actually producing the most STEM graduates, by every measure that matters?

1. Where the Most STEM Graduates Actually Come From

By raw headcount, the global rankings are dominated by exactly two countries, with everyone else trailing far behind.


🇨🇳 China produced approximately 3.57 million STEM graduates in 2020, more than any other nation on Earth.


🇮🇳 India followed at 2.55 million, and 🇺🇸 the United States at a comparatively modest 820,000.


🇷🇺 Russia, 🇧🇷 Brazil, and 🇲🇽 Mexico rounded out the top six, ranging from 221,000 to 520,000.


China and India together account for more STEM graduates than the next nine countries on this list combined.


💡 Worth noting: as recently as 2016, the global top seven looked meaningfully different — Iran and Japan both ranked ahead of Brazil and Mexico, before both Latin American nations overtook them within just a few years.



2. Where STEM Dominates the Curriculum Most

Total headcount favors large countries. A very different ranking emerges once you ask what share of all graduates choose a STEM field in the first place.


🇲🇾 Malaysia leads the world, with 43.5% of its tertiary graduates earning a STEM degree.


🇹🇳 Tunisia follows closely at nearly 40%.


🇮🇳 India, despite its massive absolute numbers, sits at 34% — still well above the global norm, but behind both smaller nations on this list.


The pattern extends further: the UAE, Germany, Belarus, and South Korea all cross the 30% threshold, alongside Algeria, Mauritania, and Morocco just below it — a cluster spanning the Arab world, Eastern Europe, and East Asia.


🔎 Worth sitting with: none of the world's five wealthiest Western economies crack the top of this specific ranking — STEM curriculum dominance turns out to correlate more with deliberate national policy than with overall national wealth.



3. Where STEM Makes Up the Smallest Share

For genuine contrast, here's where STEM graduates represent the thinnest slice of the graduating class among major economies.


🇧🇷 Brazil posts the lowest STEM share among large economies studied, at just 17.5%.


🇺🇸 The United States follows at 19.6%, and 🇪🇸 Spain at 23%.


🇫🇷 France and 🇬🇧 the United Kingdom round out the group at 25% and 26%.


The gap between Malaysia's 43.5% and Brazil's 17.5% means a Malaysian student is roughly two and a half times more likely to graduate in a STEM field than a Brazilian one.


📊 Worth remembering: Brazil's low share here sits in real tension with its Section 1 standing as a top-six STEM producer by raw volume — a large enough population can still generate hundreds of thousands of STEM graduates even from a comparatively small percentage of the whole.


4. Brazil and Mexico's Rapid Rise

Behind the current snapshot sits a genuine growth story — two countries expanding their STEM pipelines far faster than an established leader standing still.


📈 Mexico's number of STEM graduates grew approximately 30% between 2015 and 2020.


📈 Brazil's grew by roughly 26% over the same five-year period.


📊 Japan's STEM graduate output, by contrast, remained essentially flat across the same window.


Both Latin American nations' growth is precisely what allowed them to overtake Iran and Japan in the global rankings within less than a decade.


🔮 A prediction worth holding onto: if this growth differential continues, researchers expect both countries to keep climbing the global rankings — a genuine structural shift in where the world's STEM talent pipeline is expanding fastest.



5. China's Outlier Status

One country doesn't appear in Section 2's or Section 3's UNESCO-based rankings at all — because UNESCO doesn't publish comparable data for it. That absence hides a genuinely striking figure.


🇨🇳 China reports that more than 40% of its college graduates earn a STEM degree, according to the country's own national data.


🇺🇸 The United States, using the same broad definition, sits at just 19.6% — meaning China's STEM share is roughly double America's.


Analysts caution that China classifies engineering and science fields more broadly than most Western statistical agencies, which complicates direct comparison — but even accounting for that gap, the scale of China's STEM pipeline remains extraordinary.


🔎 Worth remembering: a separate, narrower US government count found just 1.6 million Chinese science and engineering graduates in 2014 using stricter definitions — a reminder that "STEM graduate" numbers vary enormously depending entirely on how broadly the category gets drawn.



6. The Quality Question: What Happens After Graduation

Producing STEM graduates is one achievement. Building research infrastructure substantial enough to actually employ them is another — and the gap here reveals a genuine imbalance.


💰 The United States invests 3.5% of its GDP in research and development, the highest rate of any major economy on Earth.


💰 India, despite ranking second globally in raw STEM graduate output, invests just 0.64% of GDP in R&D — under a fifth of America's rate.


That mismatch has real consequences: without enough domestic research roles to absorb its graduates, a substantial share of India's STEM talent moves into IT services work or emigrates entirely, rather than feeding into homegrown research and innovation.


💡 The honest takeaway: raw graduate numbers measure a pipeline's size, not what a country actually does with the talent flowing through it — and those two things can diverge dramatically.



7. China's Pursuit of PhD Dominance

To close, it's worth looking specifically at the most advanced tier of STEM education, where the competitive stakes run highest.


🎓 Chinese universities are projected to produce more than 77,000 STEM PhD graduates annually as of 2025.


🎓 The United States, by comparison, produced 43,942 science and engineering doctorate recipients in 2024, according to the National Science Foundation — meaning China's pipeline outpaces America's by nearly 2 to 1.


China has consistently out-graduated the United States in STEM PhDs specifically since the mid-2000s, a lead that has only widened since.


🔮 Worth remembering: this PhD gap is precisely the trend that prompted the 2023 US Executive Order on AI workforce development — a direct policy response to a competitive gap that had already been widening for nearly two decades before anyone in Washington moved to address it.
