Why are so many American's in prison?

The best short video I've seen on the subject. Metrics based. Surprising info that I found fascinating. A few tidbits mentioned:
There are about 2 million Americans in prison. 75% of those or more are in state prisons (of which slightly under half are being held awaiting trial).
The overwhelming majority of prisoners are there for violent crimes and have been in prison before. Return customers.
And no, drug arrests don't account for a large number of this group. Only around 15%. And these folks are trafficers with massive rap sheets.
How did this all start. From 1960 to the 1990s the US went on a crime spree. For example the murder rate in NYC went up over 600%.
Chief among the contributors was the ramp in single parent families that preceeded the crime #s by about 10 years. The new dads were gang bangers.
