Zeihan explains pros/cons of mass immigration

Great short review of the issue.

  • Immigration generally is a massive boost to an economy, especially if the nation either has a shortage of labor or is "aging out". Ergo doesn't produce enough kids to replace folks retiring.

  • If a nation is going through a recession or people are out of work (our Great Depression for example) immigration isn't going to be popular.

  • Some nations don't have a history of immigration and have trouble absorbing new cultures (Japan for example).

  • While the US has had many successful waves of immigration, Mexican being the last huge winner, the current crop from Venezuela has not worked well. Why? Too many, too fast. Need massive US gov subsidies which aren't popular. Job skills don't match up well with job openings.
