The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee is sending its biggest Winter Olympics team ever to the 2026 Games in Italy — 232 Olympic athletes representing 32 home states.

The CBS News data team mapped the home states of the athletes to identify which states had the most representation.

Colorado leads with 30 athletes, followed by Minnesota, which is home to 24, and California, with 19.

States with the fewest competitors include Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, North Dakota and Washington, D.C., each with just one, while 18 states have no athletes on the team.

Three team members listed hometowns in other countries, hailing from New Zealand, Canada and Ukraine. Also, three alternate athletes are not included in the official count.

The team will include 98 returning Olympians who have won a combined 22 gold medals, according to the committee.

Thirty-two athletes previously competed at the Youth Olympic Games, with 20 of them making their Olympic debut this week.

This roster surpasses the 228 American athletes who competed at PyeongChang in the 2018 Winter Games — though Summer Olympic teams are even bigger.

Historically

Steamboat Springs, Colorado has produced more Winter Olympians than any other town in the United States. The town has an incredible Olympic legacy with over 100 Olympians across more than 90 years of Winter Games. These athletes have made 179 total Winter Olympic appearances across eight different disciplines and have represented eleven different countries including the US, Canada, Australia, and Czech Republic.

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, founded over 100 years ago, has been the driving force behind this success, developing talent at the Howelsen Hill facilities year after year. To put it in perspective, in Steamboat Springs, approximately one out of every 136 residents is an Olympian!

Other historically significant towns include:

  • Park City, Utah - a renowned ski destination

  • Lake Placid, New York - home to two Winter Olympics (1932, 1980)

  • Warroad, Minnesota - despite having fewer than 2,000 people, has produced 8 Olympic hockey players, including members of both the legendary 1960 and 1980 gold medal teams

For the current Games (which just started yesterday), the town rankings have shifted:

  1. Park City, Utah - 11 athletes (the most)

  2. Steamboat Springs, Colorado - multiple athletes continuing the tradition

  3. Lake Placid, New York - several athletes

  4. Anchorage, Alaska - several athletes

Steamboat Springs continues to send athletes to the 2026 Games, including freestyle mogul skiers Jaelin Kauf and Olivia Giaccio, snowboarders Cody Winters and Maddy Schaffrick, and ski jumper Jason Colby, among others.

Pretty impressive for your hometown!
